As 2011 draws to a close, we wish to highlight the need for financial support for the independent documentary industry in Cape Town and South Africa. Most financial incentives are tailored for big feature film productions or international productions that use local labour and locations. Documentary filmmakers rely heavily on the television industry for finance or the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) and unfortunately these budgets are usually limited.
We are now developing two documentaries. The Robbie Jansen concept is under review and more details on this will be available soon. Community House: Spirit of the Citizen captures the present and past social significance of this heritage site, located in Salt River, Cape Town and home to several non-profit, community development organisations. The film provides an opportunity to reflect on the changing nature of community leadership in Cape Town. Research for this project is made possible through a NFVF grant.
